Monday, January 25th, 2010Oh Babylon, when will you ever learn
Tuesday, January 19th, 2010If you are not familiar with the history of Babylon, here is a quick history. The first government to spread it’s power across all civilization, it was a power full empire worthy of respect and mention when talking about the great powers of history. Much like other world powers to follow it, when it had finished conquering the known world, it looked to other feats to demonstrate it’s greatness and to keep it’s subjects busy. They set out to build a tower. Tower’s were not new to them architecturally, but they wanted to create one so large, that they could reach out and touch the clouds. They wanted everyone who sees it to see their brilliance and power.
As the story goes, they were doing pretty well. So well, that they had gotten God’s attention. God, speaking to himself as he commonly must do, being that the only other being worthy of having a conversation with is himself, said to himself, “We must stop them”. He continued to explain to himself, “If they are allowed to complete this, then they will think they are truly capable of anything.” At first glance, this seems like a real jerkish thing for God to think. But if you have ever had children, and you see them doing something crazy and daring, your first thought is “oh, I hope they don’t fall”. But when they don’t fall when you thought they would, you quickly realize the scary truth. If a child never gets hurt doing dangerous things, he never learns those boundaries and will continue to push out and pursue more dangerous stunts until he does more damage then a scraped knee. I think this is what God was thinking. Not that he didn’t want them to do well, but that if they continued in this manner of unstoppable pride and confidence, that it would in fact be their downfall. Or maybe God was just being a bully, who really knows.
So God stopped work on the tower by changing their languages and moving them to new locations. Kind of a strange story. I imagine a SIMS game where God just picks up SIM characters and physically moved them, but it also could just be that people got sick of communication failures and moved on. The story explains the biblical history of how so many people groups developed speaking different languages across the world. If you think you are to intellectual to believe a story like that, then tell me this. Since science has already proven that all men are descend from one man, how did completely unique languages form? You would think that all languages would have closer commonality if we all developed out of one group. Interesting thought, but not the thought I want to discuss today.
Have you seen the latest and greatest achievements of man when it comes to architectural height? The Burj Khalifa in Dubi which was just completed at the beginning of 2010 stands at 2,717 ft tall. That’s a little more than nine football fields. It now tops the scale of largest man made structure knocking down the current reigning champion which was a radio tower in North Dakota. Nearly twice the size of the Empire state building, you can see the entire city of Dubi from the top of the tower.
With 160 floors, it really is something to look at. I thought after 911 the world would have backed off of building super tall sky scrapers, but apparently they believe that placing a mosque on the 158th floor will deter Islamic terrorist from trying to knock it down. But even if they built the safest structure in history, I’m not sure you could ever convince someone to lease the top 60 floors with all the fears of working that high up. Not to mention the 15-30 minute elevator ride once it get’s populated and people are getting on and off. What a hassle. And just so you could look outside and have an awesome view? Buy a poster! Dubi is already suffering from some pretty serious financial problems due to the world financial climate and the amount they have been investing in infrastructure. But other than the financial worries, there have been no major setbacks during construction.
Since this latest achievement of tower building is much grander then that of the early babylon empire, that leaves us with a few thoughts about God’s actions and current lack of actions concerning tower building.
- God isn’t concerned for our saftey, because we are older and smarter and better at building things. This is very unlikely, because if anything we have proven with this new structure that we don’t build things better and stronger, just cheaper and faster. The building designer was quoted as saying “I didn’t know how tall I was going to make it. We just kept adding to the top until we couldn’t any more.” I’m sorry, but that is also my toddlers methodology for building towers, and his don’t last very long either.
- God is just sitting back and allowing us to set ourselves up to fail. He sees that we didn’t learn the easy way, so he’s going to allow us to learn the hard way.
- God just doesn’t care any more. And I don’t mean this in a dark agnostic way. I mean he is still there, and still the loving God we all know. But when see a man smoking a cigarette and walking into moving traffic, you don’t mention to him that cigarettes are the leading cause of lung cancer. Nope, he is going to die in a matter of minutes, so things like lifestyle choices, bad habits, pride and dangerously tall towers don’t really warrant a conversation. This is a scary thought if you think about it.
Whatever God’s reasons, he hasn’t given any a language lobotomy to anyone over it yet. One thing is for sure though. People haven’t changed one bit. All our self praise over how evolved we are, and how we live in an age of enlightenment. We are still guys in rudimentary garments, shoving monoliths up in the loose soil so that everyone can see how gifted we are. Something to consider. The tallest Non-man-made structure is Mount Everest, standing at 29,029 Feet. Nearly 10 times the size of the Burj Khalifa. So we may be able to pat ourselves on the back for this one, but I wouldn’t expect to get many kudos from the creator on it. Plus, I have a feeling that Everest will last longer.

“Happy Marriages.” – That’s so gay.
Wednesday, January 13th, 2010I’m writing this to address the liberal minded people out there and the moderates who are quickly jumping on the band wagon of supporting the gay marriage movement in hopes that you would read this and open your perspective on the issue.
Gay Marriage isn’t just a civil rights issue, It’s a separation of church and state issue.
For those of you who don’t know your history, marriage is an institution that was ordained by God and incorporated into religious practice since the beginning of civilization, and then much much later adopted by the federal government to identify families for tax and legal reasons. If you don’t like that the government piggy backing it’s legislation on religious institutions like marriage, then that is a different issue then modifying the definition of marriage. You could change the tax laws and allow for contractual arrangements for all those instances that require legal relationships. This could be useful to more than just homosexuals. But you CAN’T redefine a religious sacrament that predates the constitution to make yourself feel better.
If you disagree, as a homosexual, then I have one challenge for you. Procreate.
There has been much work done in the past decade to provide equal rights to everyone despite their sexual preference, with the exception of pedophiles, animal lovers, and polygamists. There are some issues that really need to be dealt with when it comes to health care decisions and identifying next of kin. But it seems like a simple next of kin document and some form of power of attorney document would take care of most of those issues. This is where the concept of civil unions has come in to provide for those issues in one document. But in America, the gay movement says that that is not enough. Why? European gays don’t mind civil unions. Mainly because they don’t care much about God or what Godly people think of them. In America, this generation of homosexuals is looking for more than rights. They are asking for everyone’s approval. They want to be told it’s more than allowable, that it’s normal. But it’s not normal. It’s not equal to a man and wife. You can have equal rights, but you are not guaranteed equality. If you disagree, as a homosexual, then I have one challenge for you. Procreate. Show me how you contribute to the whole of society through re-population. See, in the Christian belief, marriage was designed for the purpose of producing offspring. To “Go forth and multiply” was the command by God to Adam and Eve. You may say that you don’t believe in the bible or in God all together, so these arguments don’t hold up. But then I ask you, why are you trying to change the religious institution of marriage? Why not be content with the rights and liberties of civil unions.
The reason that so many are moving towards supporting the gay ajenda for marriage rights, is that they have fallen into a slipper slope argument that begins with a bad premise.
- Gay people are a minority group like racial minorities, who are being oppressed because of they are different.
- Civil Unions are a lesser status then marriage and an insult to equality.
- Non-support of Gay marriage makes you a close minded bigot raciest hate monger.
- Gay marriage doesn’t harm anyone, so why bother being against it.
If it was genetic, they would be extinct by now…
First of all, I have to admit, I’m a white guy in his early 30′s, so I’ve never experienced real racism first hand. But I do love to hear the stories of the stories of the sit-ins and demonstrations that revolutionized our countries race relations. America was wrong about a bunch of issues when it came to interacting with different cultures. We destroyed the Indians culture to dominate it with one we were more comfortable with. We engaged in the heinous act of slave trade and for a long time after looked down upon dark skinned people and pigion holed their potential. We poked fun and stereotyped the Irish when they migrated to our shores. We vilify Latinos for political posturing. We suck at race relations as a country. But to measure the struggles of homosexuality up to the struggles of racism, to me, feels like an insult to the civil rights movement. People are not born gay. This is a story some would like for you to believe, but the tough truth is that it is just a sexual and relational preference. It isn’t a genetic disposition, because that’s impossible, since gay people don’t pass genes down. If it was genetic, they would be extinct by now, or at least in an ever decreasing population.
Homosexuality is more comparable to the hippie movement of the late 60′s and early 70′s. It’s a lifestyle, not a race. And people hated hippies too, and even kicked them out of stores and restaurants. But that wasn’t racism. That was seeing someone who’s culture and values were perceived as a danger to you and your offspring and reacting to protect your culture and values. And now, several centuries later, we can all agree that the drug and free love atmosphere of that movement wasn’t all that they had hoped it would be and did in fact do a lot of damage to those who got lost in it.
Some hard line conservatives are bothered by the fact that I’m okay with civil unions. My feelings are that as long as they don’t try to mess with my rights and religious practices, then I have no right to oppose them because I believe it to be immoral. I’m comforted by the fact that my beliefs are based on principles that have survived this kind of thing in the past and will outlast this phase of history as well. Allowing for civil unions won’t turn any more people gay, just as not allowing them doesn’t stop homosexual behavior. But I do have issue with messing with the identity of changing the definition of marriage. I want my children to grow up seeing marriage as a sacred and life changing event that is the celebration of the beginning of a new family.
it’s a slippery slope when the government starts defining religious institutions
I don’t blame homosexuals for the downfall of marriage. It has been under attack for a long time by the culture off divorce and separation. But that doesn’t mean we can further distort it’s meaning. It means that now, more then ever, we need to stand up for it and defend it from harm.
Who does it really hurt? It might not seem like much if you are not a person of faith, or hold anything to be sacred. But it’s a slippery slope when the government starts defining religious institutions and legislating who is allowed to partake in them. Will the next step be laws that define who is eligible for salvation. Who can be baptized and how. The government has no place in that. And in case you didn’t know, the bible is very clear on this. Those eligible for salvation are everyone. Including gays, rapist, murders, and even overly opinionated jerks like me.
If you think I have it completely wrong, then leave a comment and tell me how. Or even better, write your 1000 word essay on the issue and submit it to fickled.com. But whatever you say, don’t call me close minded. I have given this a lot of thought, and being against something is not the definition of close minded.
How Google will change your life in 2010

Google Voice
If you haven’t signed up yet, you are really missing out. Imagine having a phone number that wasn’t tied to any contract or device, but could be dynamically applied to multiple phones or devices, or you can simply use it as an answering service and it will transcribe your messages and send you emails or text messages to notify you. You can finally feel comfortable enough to ditch your contract and start using pay as you go phones, knowing that if you ever loose service, you won’t miss calls. I see them adding a premium version in the future. There is a lot of potential in a service like this. It wouldn’t be difficult to have it receive faxes and save them as jpeg files.
Android
I get the feeling Google just enjoys taking over new industries and upsetting the power balance. Android is an operating system for mobile phones. Much like the iphone, but build with a more open environment and not tied to a single provider. Although right now, T-mobile seems to have the most connections with Google, there is no reason other phone providers can’t start producing phones with android on them. This has also led to Google creating their own phone that will also change the market. Google is trying to make mobile communications more standard, and one method for doing that is to produce the operating system and phone. As users interface with the web through their mobile devices, Google can create more integration knowing that they have set the standard for mobile browsing and made it available to everyone. Vice versa, if you want to keep up with the latest Google web applications have to offer, you will want or need a Google phone or a phone running Android. It all works out good for Google and for the users.
Google Chrome
If you are not using Chrome as your browser to surf the web, then I highly recommend you do so. It’s a great browser, and very secure, and SUPER FAST. Now if your a complete nerd, you may want to still use Firefox because of it’s development platform. But for the typical internet user, Chrome is the ideal browser. Also with it’s ability to turn a web based app like facebook into an application that I can launch like a normal application makes life just that much easier and less confusing for the Luddites who are just now trying to get caught up with the web.

Searching Status Updates
We have barely scratched the surface of possibilities of crowd sourcing and social media. You hear a loud noise outside late at night, like fireworks going off. What do you do? You Google it, only to be reminded that the news media wont’ cover it unless it’s a plane crash, and even that will take several hours to discover. But if you could scream out your window “Did you hear that?” and hear the neighbor say “It was a car backfire”, how nice would that be. By searching status updates you can find out what is going on RIGHT NOW. As more user get on to social media, this ability will become more and more useful during natural disasters and when you want to know the latest buzz.
The new layout of fickled.com
Monday, January 4th, 2010So if you have ever been here before, you probably noticed a drastic design change. For this year, I’m going to refocus my efforts on this site and try to maintain the content myself, and stop bugging friends to contribute. You can still contribute if you like, either by registering or through our facebook application. And any decent submissions will be published, but not everything will make it to the monthly front cover. I will select or write the five stories for the cover page. If you want to try to get something published for the cover, I need it submitted a few days before the first of the month to get it into the next issue. If your story is more time sensitive, then it may get published sooner but it can still make it to the cover of the next issue. Of course, I reserve the right to not publish your submissions if I feel it doesn’t reflect well on the theme and style of fickled.com
You will probably continue to see changes going on throughout the site for the next few months as I iron out all the details. If you have any thoughts, or notice something looking funny, I appreciate a comment on this article or you can shoot me an email to editor@fickled.com
Apple Computers & Barak Obama
Friday, January 1st, 2010The following is intended to be a light hearted comparison of the marketing and political positioning of Barak Obama and the Apple Computer company. I in no way mean any disrespect for our President. I think he’s a great guy and brilliant politician. Apple on the other hand, I apologize for nothing. You can go lay an egg.
I used to own an couple apple computers. I was told as a designer, that they were built for graphics and that buying any other computer would be something I would later regret. This was right around the time OS 9 was about to retire and give way to the future of computing, that would later become named after exotic cats, called OS X. Little did I know then the marketing gimic that I had fallen into. Neither did I at that time know that only 10 years later, a man would run for the office of president of the United States of America using the same pitch. Let me break down the spin.
Something you’ve never seen before.
When the new iMac designs started coming out, they revolutionized the way people picture their computers. What was once an old dusty beige box that you covered and hid inside of a computer desk, was now a sexy colorful decoration that you would show off to all your friends. Barak Obama didn’t run his campaign to take full advantage of his sexy new look as the first black president, but it did become a major factor that drew attention away from other aspects of his political views. Liberals were so excited they didn’t realize how moderate he was and conservatives were afraid to confront him head on in fear that it would look like they were standing in the way of racial equality and the past 40 years of civil rights progress. But when you really ask the question, does the outside shell of your computer really make any difference in how well the computer will work, how fast it is, or if it will be there for you day in and day out. And when the glimmer of how different it looked new starts to fade, will it just end up looking like another old moldy politician who lied to you to get your vote.
Over Simplification
When you purchase an iMac computer it comes with one page of instructions, usually only pictures. And honestly, if you have never used a computer before, they are tremendously simple to use. That is, until you want to do something with it that isn’t covered in the comic book instruction sheet. Take the mouse for instance. It only has one button. I as enamored with this simple mouse for a while. Until I realized how much productivity was lost by just using one button and having to now use two hands to do simple takes that were once easily accomplished with one. Everything on a Macintosh is easy at the entry level, but as you become a more advanced user, it becomes cumbersome. Obama too made things sound a lot simpler then they really were. He may have actually been naive about things like health care reform and closing Guantanamo Bay, but it is much more likely that he just tricked us with pretty talk. When Obama speaks, he always presents the complex issues with hope and optimism, but never real hard answers. But his hope and optimism is so eloquently put that we often don’t notice when he glazes over a very important detail in a way that makes no sense at all.
Vague Promises, Unmeasurable Results
I was told that Apples were better for graphic design. When I researched to find proof or some kind of benchmarking for graphics, at the time, nothing standard between macs and PCs existed to quantify their speed. It’s like trying to compare a
Porche 911 to a Ferrari 599 GTB and assuming that the Porche is faster based on the number applied to it being higher then 599. This is a ridiculous way to to compare cars, but unfortunately it is very difficult to test drive a Mac and PC side by side, since they are rarely carried in the same store. Much the same, as an incumbent in the 2008 elections every democrat ran on the same platform. “We will do better than it is currently being done.” And since every democrat also thoroughly agreed that the Bush years had been one step above pure crap, they only needed to promise two steps above pure crap. This marketing effort of saying the other team is so terrible and I will do it better is the most vague type or marketing, because what exactly are we promising. Apple did feel like they ran faster, but at the time most PC’s were multitasking 10 to 15 applications at a time and on Mac’s there were only 10 to 15 applications you could run on a Mac. When it came down to it, the hardware was about the same. A lot like what we got with Obama.

Although he ran on a “better than” campaign, I often find myself asking how any one decision he has made would have been different under the Bush administration. And the best part about running after Bush who’s approval ratings were so low on the way out, is that anything that goes wrong with the country for the next four years, can be blamed on the previous eight years. And if the public is gullible enough, we will give any credit for positive events that happen to the current administration
Security Logic
The latest craze for Macs is based around the lack of viruses for Macintosh operating systems and the low amount of bugs in the system. This is true. But not because the system is impenetrable. It would be like Obama claiming that the he was the better choice because he had never lost a war. If you haven’t been in a war, then you can’t loose. Macs are based on a Unix platform that is very secure and has a strong foundation. But Macs are going the same direction as PCs. More integration with other devices and software. This is where the bugs come in. Yes, if you bought a PC and never loaded any software that didn’t come from Microsoft, you may never experience a bug. But in the world of PCs, there is an abundant amount of software available. With all this software comes bugs. As Macs start to have more applications developed for it, there will be conflicts with resources leading to freeze ups. You of course wont’ get a blue screen of death, but instead a cute twirling disk cursor. When it comes to viruses, they are written for the bottom end users of the computer world. People who are likely to believe anything they read and click buttons that most advanced users would never click. Right now, most Mac users are more advanced users. At least, that was true until they started advertising that their OS couldn’t get viruses. Now everyone is getting their grandmother a Mac instead of a PC. College kids are buying Macs to take to school. Soon there will be a larger population of ignorant computer users all on Macs. Venerabilities are discovered on Macs, just like Windows comes out with patches, so do Macs. Right now those holes are patched before they can be misused, but that will not always be true. Once there are enough users for the Mac world, there will be a fair share of viruses. Only the problem will be doubled, because the users will believe they are not likely to get a virus. So they won’t be running antivirus, and they won’t be concerned over strange behavior or requests from the operating system.
The Growing Gray Lines
So years have now passed since my first purchases of an iBook and an iMac. I am now fully converted over to PCs because they are so much more cost effective if you know how computers work. Of course now, there are people who buy PCs and load the Mac OS on to them. And Mac fanatics have learned new ways of running Windows based software. There is now a growing number of software application built on a universal model that runs on both platforms. The systems emulate each other’s designs to the point that it is difficult to decipher the differences. The truth is that software evolves based on the community that it serves. As the technology develops in different areas, it tends to merge together toward the most effective solution. The same is true for politicians. As the voter community builds and advances in communication, politics will move away from the extremes of left and right and closer to the middle. It might not be completely true for Barak Obama, but he did turn out to be a lot more moderate then either side anticipated. I could see a day when running for president has less to do with fundraising from the extremes of society and more to do with pleasing the wider public that lives somewhere in the vast gray middle of political thought.
