America’s Got Issues

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Okay, so I admit that I’m not a big fan of reality TV, and I think watching the latest America’s Got Talent on NBC, helped me to realize why I’m not a big fan of the reality genre. It’s not really the show I have a problem with. It’s not the formula of two has-beens and a foreigner berating and conversely encouraging amateur talent in hopes if big grand prizes. It has more to do with why people watch these shows that bothers me, more then the shows themselves. The brief time I watched the show, there was an opera singer, a dance group, and a dog act. I thought that the opera singing was quiet good. But it got me thinking of all the truly gifted and hard working opera singers out there, who could never get air time on a major network in prime time, yet here is this woman, who I am certain has worked hard at her craft, but would America watch and enjoy her as much if she was perfect.

There was an experiment done once where they took a world class violinist and placed him on the street corner to play for spare change. No one noticed the quality of his playing, nor did he make any more money then the typical street performer. The truth is, that in America, we have lost interest in perfection or even the strive for excellence in the arts. We prefer the drama of failure to the awe of dedication.

The majority of the people who watch these reality talent shows are not hoping for someone to wow them, they are just watching for the train wrecks. It’s like watching figure skating for the falls, or nascar for the crashes. If we were really interested in true talent, then I think that PBS would have better ratings for the times they air true world class performances.

Aliens people…aliens.

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Are aliens really out there? Are we all alone here on this glowy blue orb? Are aliens really visiting us here on Earth? The answers to these questions are: no, yes, and Keebler Elves. All of these queries we have heard over and over again throughout the last 60 plus years and I, for one, am sick of listening. You see, for all the bloviating that Ufology experts and X-files lovers do over the above questions really wastes time and precious synapses and takes away from the most important question…What do the aliens look like?

I am writing this blog to ignite the firestorm that is the discussion of what aliens might look like. You see, I just watched District 9. Low budget, good acting, cool effects, great movie. However, it got me thinking, why do these aliens (the “Prawns” to those who are in the know) look like Zoidberg from Futurama? And furthermore, why do they have eyes such as the ones that we possess? Strange indeed. Now if you sit down with a fellow alien abductee or watch any kind of alien/UFO related show on tv, you will find that most people agree that aliens look like little grey/green men. Now these “Greys” as they are known in the alien community, most of them have bulbous heads, and large black eyes. There is the occasional tall, lanky Grey, but that is really the only discernible difference between them all. You all agree that thats pretty boring right? Thought so.

I for one am not pleased with this one bit. These people need to use their imaginations!! They can’t expect us to get all fired up over a few small uninteresting “greys” now can they? However, let’s just say that the collective experience had by all of these “subjects” resulted in them being captured by something a little more interesting, say…cats? But not just house cats, I’m talking about the cats from Cats, the Broadway show. Now that is something that gets people interested! Or maybe even the Cats mixed in with a few dogs, or muskrats, or even dolphins…I don’t know. You see readers, the frustrating thing is that these people never went for the gold here! They could’ve told us anything and we could have never disproved it. So why not give us something really cool to think about, or fear, or loathe?

So here we are people, at the precipice. All wondering what these buggers could possibly look like. I’ve shared some of my opinions on their make up here with you today. I can only hope that this starts a thread the likes of which have never been seen and, we can all come together to devise some of the coolest aliens ever. So when we finally get abducted, we can tell the world something awesome.

The dying population.

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Have you ever noticed, how even though every cigarette box, the surgeons general warning glimmers in all its’ might, people still place the smooth deathstick between their lips and light up, or how even though all the studies come out about marijuana, pills, etc, people still take the chance that to feel better, they could simply take something and their problems will change.I guess it just goes to show that the current generation will do just about anything, if it’s a pill, powder, or herb the chances are the local teenager will be up to try it. Considering almost everyone I know has tried a drug, or is currently using drugs. But in all reality, most kids use drugs to be cool, or because it’s simply what they’re told not to do,and I don’t think any act of congress, laws, or crackdowns will ever change that kids just don’t want to listen, making them unique.

The “Scene” Kids.

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Who were the kids in your day who were considered “Different”? The kids with the studded vests and who listened to the Dead Kennedys? Were they the kids who wear the motorcycle jackets and slick their hair back? No matter who it was, you know who I’m talking about. The non-conformists who refuse to do anything that is “cool”, regardless of what people think. Chances are, with in weeks, they have started a trend, and the style is no longer different, leading to the person changing styles again, and repeating all over again.
Well, in my generation, these kids are known as the “Scene” kids. They are well known for cutting their wrists, wearing overly-tight jeans, having hair which is ofter considered “interesting”, and having over processed myspace profiles, with page after page after page of complex HTML code. They are often mistaken for associates of the “emo” crowd in High Schools across America. Although they usually claim to be “Misunderstood” and simply the result of a rough home life, most of the time they are anything but. How else would they have the money for their T-Mobile Sidekicks, and all the loud clothes they have?

I don’t have a problem with the people. I just have a problem with the overrall style they have. They claim to be “Non-comformists”, yet they are CONFORMING to this sub-culture, which is a total contridiction in itself. They are anything but different, most of the time. Here and their you might run into a genuine Kurt Cobain-ish kid, who has a valid reason to be angry at the world, and actually knows why they act the way they do. But most of the time, these kids just want to look different from every other kid in their boring suburban town, and decide to look as different and often times, flat-out crazy as possible.

To me, they are an insult to the actual underground community, who have reason to be different. The people who do it because they love it, not because they want to be different. It is a slap in the face to non-conformists everywhere to see little suburban kids trying to imitate a culture which they know nothing of besides bright clothes and lots of Osiris shoes. I’m sure the people are nice, and have their own little perfect suburban home-lives. But it’s the whole idealogy of them thinking they are so different which has me bothered….

The current state of hiphop.

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

I remember in 5th grade, I hated hiphop. I hated everything about it. The glamour, the ebonics, the “crunk” dancing, even the clothes. I saw nothing in this so called “Music” except drugs, women, and loud yelling. But that all changed one day when I was cleaning my room and found a Bone-thugz-N-Harmony cassette tape, “East Eternal 1999″. I had this old tape player, so I threw it in. I realized this was different from “hiphop”. They were telling a story, whether it be about their home lives, or how one of their freinds had been shot. This was much different then the hiphop I was hearing on the radio. I loved it. I soon indulged in music such as Tupac Shakur, The Notorious BIG, Eminem, and more. By 7th grade, I had worn that tape out. All my freinds would bring Ipods on the bus, and I would bring a walkman to listen to Tupac’s tape, “Makaveli”. To me, that is the beauty in hiphop. Hiphop in it’s truest from. Hiphop is so much more than drugs and women and “Bling”. That is the commercial hiphop. REAL hiphop is the stuff you will never see on MTV or on the radio, because it is so real. REAL hiphop is about what is going on in OUR world. Teenage pregnancy, racial oppression, poverty, drug dealing, gangs, divorce, domestic abuse: the list seems to go on and on.

No other music can capture NOW like hiphop can. Hiphop can take you to another world for the 4 minutes that the Emcee has the microphone. It can put you in his shoes. His daily life. His emotions, his past, his now, and his future. As KRS-One, a pioneer of hiphop said in his song entitled Hiphop Lives, “Hip and Hop is more than music. Hip is the knowledge. Hop is the movement”. I think those lyrics capture what hiphop truely is. Hip is the knowing of what is NOW. It is what makes you want to know and listen. The Hop is what makes you want to dance to it. It is pure art.

If only hiphop these days were more than bumping into a lady-freind at a club, or “smoking on some purp”. It’s a shame. Hiphop used to be so much more. Hopefully, with the release of Eminem’s “Relapse 2″ and Dr.Dre’s re-release of the multi-platinum album, “The Chronic”, these two classic rappers will inspire some kid cleaning his room to bring hiphop back.

Rummy K Politics

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

I was watching the President give his town hall meeting in Grand Junction, Colorado. Obama really needs to do more stuff like this, because it is a lot easier to see where he is coming from. After seeing this speech, I am 90% the general idea of what is being proposed by Obama, although I doubt once it get’s through congress, it will be a much different beast. But I did gain a lot of insight of what it is that is keeping me from fully supporting the purposed reform. You can hear it in his response to some of the questions, which is why I’m embedding the video below.

First, I have to explain Rummy Kub, for those who don’t know it. It’s a game of matching numbers in order and by number. So you create groups of 3′s and colored ordered groups. As you play the game the table get’s filled with combinations that you can utlize and reorganize on your turn. Now the trick to Rummy Kub is that when it’s your turn, you have two minutes to move things around and attempt to place some of your pieces, the goal being to get rid of all your pieces. But if you are unable to find a home for all the displaces pieces in the two minutes, you are panelized and your turn is over.

When I hear Obama speak about health care reform, it feels like he is looking at the board, and he really feels as though all the pieces are there to make it possible. And it may be possible. But until we account for all the pieces of how this will happen, it’s kind of hard to judge the proposed system. It makes me wonder why we are proposing a system to the public that has a lot of empty holes in it. After all, he has more than two minutes to figure this out. Unless he wants it to push through fast for a reason. As a conservative skeptic, it would lead me to think that some of the true solutions to the problems are going to be hard to find supporters for, so if we get a rough plan approved without all the solutions specified, then it will be easier to pass the ugly solutions after we are already married to an overall plan.

Helping sick people makes me so ANGRY

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

I saw this video today. Some poeple are just looking for a chance to protest. I understand where these people are coming from, but I thought the point of a town hall meeting was to TALK about the issues. It seems kind of idiodic to show up screaming your case and acting uncivilized when this is an open opertunity to have your point heard and to bring other onto your team.
